DescriptionDichotomously branched, with thick branches reaching same height, often with young buds in their axes; spore-bearing leaves, similar to vegetative leaves, in zones alternating with vegetative leaves, each seasonal growth having a basal sterile zone and an apical fertile zone.
EcologyWoods, bogs, heaths, from lowlands up to alpine region. Described from North Europe. Circumpolar map indicates range of entire complicated species complex.
UsesContains a poisonous alkaloid causing pain in the mouth, vomiting, and diarrhea.
