DescriptionRootstock yellowish-gray, creeping, ending with single unbranched stem with terete, tubular, sheathed leaves; whole plant yellowish-green.
EcologyBogs and quagmires, apparently rare in Alaska. S. palustris described from Lap- land, Sweden, Switzerland, and Prussia.

Subsp americana differs from European type in having somewhat longer follicles and a more distinct curving beak, and thus constitutes a slightly different race, but the difference is not marked in Alaskan specimens. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of subsp. palastris.
