DescriptionTufted, with short, subterranean stem, culms up to 1 meter tall; leaves grayish- green, 4-8 mm broad, their sheaths with sharp keel; panicle compound, of dense, 1-sided, congested clusters, of extremely variable appearance, at ends of long, stiff, scabrous branches; spikelets 6-7 mm long, with 3—4 florets and highly variable pubescence; lemma 5-nerved, with short awn.
