DescriptionCulms stout, up to 2 cm thick at base, erect, in rows from thick, stout, scaly, reddish-brown rhizome; basal sheaths membranaceous, bladeless; involucral leaf shorter than the compressed inflorescence; spikelets dark brown; scales ovate, with excurrent keel, equaling or slightly exceeding achenes.
EcologyShallow water, marshes. Described from islands of the Caribbean. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of the closely related S. Tabernaemontani S. G. Gmel.
