DescriptionLoosely tufted, with short runners; culm leafless, with 2 basal sheaths, the upper with oblique mouth; spike ovate, 5-7-flowered; scales ovate, obtuse to somewhat acute, brown with hyaline margin, the lower about half as long as the spike and encircling half the culm; bristles 6; achenes trigonous-obovoid, with barely dis- tinguishable tubercle, conical above and black at tip.
EcologySwamps. Described from Berne, Switzerland. Circumpolar map includes range of the eastern North American subsp. Fernaldii (Svens.) Hult. (E. pauciflora var. Fernaldii Svens.).
