DescriptionCulms in dense rows from stout, dark-brown, scaly rhizome; leaves flat, very acute, scabrous, about 3 mm broad; staminate spikes broad, with light-brown scales in middle, about 2.5-3 mm long; anthers conspicuous during flowering time; pistil- late spikes cylindrical, with oblong-ovate, purplish-brown or darker, scarious-mar- gined, ciliate scales, and very hairy, fusiform to obovate perigynia, with short beak; 3 stigmas.
EcologyMeadows, heaths, wet places; common in mountains, to at least 2,000 meters. Described from Hudson Bay.
