DescriptionLong, horizontal, scaly rootstock, buried deep in sand; culms stout and stiff, with old leaves at base; leaves yellowish-green, thick, serrulate, pungent; plant dioecious; pistillate spikes crowded into large ovate head, 3-5 cm long and about 3 c¢m broad; staminate heads 3—4 cm long, 1 cm broad, with numerous spikes; perigynia lance-ovate, serrulate in margin, with long, bidentate beak.
