DescriptionCulms from short, light-brown, scaly rhizome with stolons; stem stiff, coarse, leafy below; leaves erect, canaliculate; heads 1-3; lower involucral leaf generally extending beyond inflorescence; sepals brownish-black, linear-lanceolate, acute, as long as or longer than the narrow, obtuse petals; capsule shiny, castaneous to purplish-black, mucronate, much longer than perianth.
EcologyCommon in wet places in tundra and mountains.

Var. pallidus Hook., with pale perianth bracts and capsule and often with few-flowered heads, occurs in scattered localities.
