DescriptionYellowish-green with short runners; culm with 3-5 large stem leaves; basal leaves flat, 6-12 mm broad, nearly glabrous, abruptly pointed; cyme with long, slender, arching rays, mixed with shorter rays; perianth leaves broadly lanceolate, acute, castaneous or brownish, scarious-margined; mature capsule as long as perianth or slightly longer, shiny, chestnut-brown.
EcologyMoist places in forest and tundra. Described from Europe.

Some specimens belong to var. melanocarpa (Michx.) Buchenau (Juncus mela- nocarpus Michx.), with lax cyme, pale perianth, and very dark capsule. Circum- polar map indicates range of L. parviflora, in broad sense.
