DescriptionBulb oblong, covered with a membranaceous gray coat from cordlike rootstock; flowers solitary or more rarely 2 together, about 1 cm long, the segments creamy- white, with prominent purple midvein and numerous shorter, lateral purplish nerves; capsule rounded, bluntly triangular in cross section, 3-celled.
EcologyRocky places, polygon tundra, alpine meadows and heaths, to at least 1,800 meters. Described from England and Switzerland.

Subsp. flava Calder & Taylor, which is taller and has petals with yellow base and green or yellow venation, occurs on the Queen Charlotte Islands.
