DescriptionProstrate trailing shrub; young twigs greenish-brown, glabrous; leaves dark green, leathery, stiff, long-peduncled, with raised reticulate nerves below and revolute margin; leaves extremely variable in form and pubescence, oblong-obovate or rounded, varying in size from about 5 mm in diameter to 60 mm (var. gigantifolia Ball), and in being pubescent on both sides, with long, silky, white hairs (f. villosa Kitamura, rare), or glabrous on both sides (var. semicalva Fern.); scales dark red; capsules pubescent, with short style and purplish stigmas; filaments pubescent.
EcologyCommon on both dry and moist areas of the tundra, and in mountains to over 2,000 meters. Described from Lapland and Switzerland.
