DescriptionLow shrub, usually less than 30 cm tall; young twigs smooth or finely pubescent; leaves yellowish-green on both sides, comparatively small, oblong, oblong-ovate or oblanceolate, glabrous, obtuse or somewhat acute, regularly serrated to base; catkins on leaty peduncles, small, narrower than in S. Barclayi, with short, blunt capsules and shorter styles; bracts dark, short, gray-hairy.
EcologyWet places in river valleys. Intergrades with S. Barclayi.

Var. pseudomyrsinitis (Anderss.) Ball [S. pseudocordata (Anderss.) Rydb.], with acute, long leaves and longer styles, seems to represent hybrid forms.
