| Description | Densely caespitose; basal leaves pinnate, with 7-15 oblong to oblanceolate leat- lets, divided to middle into linear-oblong segments, green above, tomentose be- neath; stem erect, pilose; stem leaves gradually reduced; bractlets lanceolate, short- er than the ovate-triangular, acute calyx lobes; petals yellow; style subapical, thick and glandular at base, about as long as achenes. | ||

| Taxonomy notes | Highly variable in pubescence: var. strigosa Pursh is the most common type; var. glabrata S. Wats. (P. glabrella Rydb.), with nearly glabrous leaves, occurs more rarely. A taxonomically very unclear species. Circumpolar map shows area of very closely related taxa in Asia; other closely related taxa occur in southern Europe and North Africa. |
