DescriptionStems several, from stout, branched caudex; basal leaves green on both sides, long-petiolated, with several oblanceolate, or elliptic-lanceolate, acute leaflets, gla- brous above, strigose-pubescent beneath; flowering stem white-pubescent; racemes short or elongated, white to brownish-pubescent; flowers blue or dark blue; calyx with pubescent, acute, linear lobes.
EcologyDry and damp slopes, gravel bars, solifluction soil, roadsides; common over large areas, in the mountains to at least 1,500 meters.

Hybrids with L. nootkatensis occur. Probably poisonous. Broken line on circum- polar map indicates range of subsp. subalpinus (Piper & Robins.) Dunn (L. subal- pinus Piper & Robins.).
