DescriptionStems from long, creeping, branched rhizome; leaves lanceolate-oblong, serrulate or occasionally subentire in margin, sparsely to copiously pubescent beneath, sca- brous in margin; heads solitary or few; involucral bracts lanceolate to broadly lanceolate, herbaceous, the outer green, squarrose, the inner purplish; ray flowers purplish; seeds pubescent; pappus as long as disk flowers, brownish.
EcologyStony slopes, river flats, meadows, in the mountains to at least 1,800 meters. Described from Siberia.

Specimens from the interior lowland are tall and branched, with sharply ser- rulated leaves; those from exposed places are low-growing, with single head and less serrulated leaves. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of the related A. meritus Nels. (See color section.)
