DescriptionSubterranean, creeping, rhizome-like stem with scattered, upright, treelike branches, rounded in outline; leaves linear-attenuate; more or less spreading.
EcologyWoods, open places, margins of bogs in lowlands. L. obscurum described from Phlladelphla var. dendroideum from Canada, New England, and mountains of Carolina.

The typical L. obscurum, which does not occur in the area of interest here, has flattened branches with more appressed leaves, In much of the range shown on the circumpolar map, the two types occur together.
