DescriptionStem creeping in surface of soil, elongate, rooting, green; branches erect, forked, divergent, obviously flattened, with somewhat glaucous leaves in 4 rows; ventral leaves much smaller than others, subulate and appressed; spikes or groups of spikes usually pedunculate.
EcologyDry woods, rarely above tree line. Described from Europe and America.

Specimens from interior differ from those from southern coast in having narrower branches and in having but one spike on each fertile branch.
