Description | Rhizome stout, long, branched, felted; stem branchless, thick, strongly striate, scabrous, evergreen, up to 50 cm tall, with a central cavity of two-thirds the diam- eter; sheaths cylindrical, whitish, with dark-brown band at base; teeth numerous, dark brown, with broad scarious margins falling off in old specimens; cones apicu- late, short-stalked. | ||
Ecology | Sandy shores, woods, rare within our area. E. hiemale described from Europe, var. californicum from California. | ||
Taxonomy notes | An extremely variable species, composed of several not very distinct taxa. Alaskan specimens have two rows of silica tubercles on ridges of stem, and are referred to var. californicum, a western American type. Circumpolar map indicates range of entire, very complicated, species complex. |
