| Description | Rhizome stout, terminating in vaselike crown of fronds; stipe furrowed above, densely chaffy, with thin, pale-brown, more or less attenuate scales; fronds elliptic- lanceolate, subcoriaceous, at least in some places evergreen, tapering at base and tip, with 20-40 pairs of alternating pinnae, the lowest rather short; pinnules with bristle-tipped teeth. | ||

| Taxonomy notes | Form of pinnules varies from ovate, with nearly peduncled base and distinct auricle, to ovate-ellipsoid, with base 2-3 mm broad attached to the rachises (var. alaskense in a narrow sense) . These types often grow together, and a sharp differentiation is hardly possible. They are therefore here regarded as a variable population under the name var. alaskense. |
