DescriptionRhizome stout, terminating in vaselike crown of fronds; stipe furrowed above, densely chaffy, with thin, pale-brown, more or less attenuate scales; fronds elliptic- lanceolate, subcoriaceous, at least in some places evergreen, tapering at base and tip, with 20-40 pairs of alternating pinnae, the lowest rather short; pinnules with bristle-tipped teeth.
EcologyWoods and rocky slopes. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of other races or varieties.

Form of pinnules varies from ovate, with nearly peduncled base and distinct auricle, to ovate-ellipsoid, with base 2-3 mm broad attached to the rachises (var. alaskense in a narrow sense) . These types often grow together, and a sharp differentiation is hardly possible. They are therefore here regarded as a variable population under the name var. alaskense.
