DescriptionRhizome creeping, covered with dark-brown lanceolate scales; stipe shorter than blade; fronds yellowish-green, up to 20 cm tall, glabrous or with few scales; pinnae oblong to slightly obovate, rounded at apex, sometimes slightly crenate.
EcologyRocks, tree trunks. P. vulgare described from Europe, subsp. columbianum from “Columbia.”

Closely related to subsp. occidentale, but apparently restricted to interior of Alaska and very rare. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of P. vulgare races other than subsps. occidentale and columbianum.
