Larix laricina var. alaskensis (Wight) Raup
| |||
Family | Pinaceae — APG family: Pinaceae
Synonyms | Larix alaskensis Wight.
Common name | tamarack | ||
Description | Small tree, up to 10 meters tall, with brownish bark, horizontal branches, and thin crown extending far down on trunk; leaves deciduous, blue-green, in fascicles of 10-20 on short spur branches.
Ecology | Muskegs, moist places, usually scattered; according to A. E. Porsild, a decided calciphile. Described from America.
Taxonomy notes | Range within area of interest is still somewhat unclear, since known localities are rather scattered. Alaskan tamarack, not a well-marked variety, differs in having proportionately longer, more papery, cone scales, often enrolled at margins, and in having bracts lacking the projecting mucronate point. Circumpolar map indicates range of entire species complex; cross on Alaskan map marks a locality for fossil L. laricina. |
