DescriptionUp to 65 meters tall and 1.5 meters in diameter, occasionally larger, with dark, thin, somewhat scaly bark; needles pungent, flattened, dark green beneath, two white stomatiferous bands above; cones 5-10 cm long, cylindrical-to-oblong, with rhombic-oblong scales.
EcologyIn pure stands or mixed with hemlock, chiefly below 500 meters in altitude, but extending occasionally to about 1,000 meters. Often propagates by layering.

A grove of Sitka spruce was planted in about 1805 at Unalaska, far west of natural range; it produces cones but does not multiply. (See color section.)
