| Taxonomy notes | Subsp americana differs from European type in having somewhat longer follicles and a more distinct curving beak, and thus constitutes a slightly different race, but the difference is not marked in Alaskan specimens. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of subsp. palastris. |
