Description | Culm up to 60 cm tall, usually lower; panicle short, cylindrical or oblong, rarely more than 4 times longer than broad, usually shorter, green to purplish; upper sheaths inflated; awns two-thirds to three-fourths as long as body of glumes; anthers light-colored. | ||
Ecology | Mountain slopes, alpine meadows, to about 1,700 meters; common along southern coast, more rare inland. | ||
Taxonomy notes | Var. americanum usually differs from circumpolar plant in having taller height, stronger inflated sheaths, and shorter awns on glumes; populations around Pacific belong to this type. |
