DescriptionUp to 40 cm tall, tufted; basal leaves short, narrow; culm leaves broad at base, evenly tapering to point; panicle narrow, in age open, with numerous branches in lowest whorl; glumes usually dark purple, about 3 mm long; lemmas white, with short, straight awn, which fails to reach top of lemma; anthers 0.5-0.6 mm.

Plants infected by nematodes have elongated spikelets. Hybrids with A. borealis and A. geminata probably occur.
