DescriptionCulm up to 70 cm tall, tufted; sheaths smooth or slightly scabrous; panicle mostly spikelike, dense, with numerous spikelets crowded to base of branches; glumes acuminate or awn-pointed, long and narrow, scabrous; lemma emarginate, with excurrent nerves, with or without awn; palea very small.
EcologyOpen ground at low altitude, common along southern coast of mainland.

Var. purpurascens Hult., with spikelets less crowded at base of panicle branches, violet spikelets, and less scabrous glumes, probably represents hybrid form with A. alaskana.
