DescriptionUp to 1 meter tall, culms from creeping rhizomes forming tussocks; leaf blades flat, scabrous, 3-8 mm broad; panicle during anthesis usually loose, open, erect, with spreading branches; glumes lanceolate or narrowly ovate, scarious, scabrous on keel; lemma nearly as long as glumes; callus hairs as long as or longer than lemma; awn delicate, straight.
EcologyMeadows, wet places. Common in interior, passing into subsp. Langsdorffi (prob- ably forming hybrid swarms). Described from Canada.
