Description | Stoloniferous, culms slender, up to 80 cm tall, much longer than basal leaves, decumbent at base; leaves flat, about 2 mm broad; panicle open, branches usually in pairs, capillary drooping; spikelets 3-5-flowered; first glume 3-nerved, second 5-nerved, much shorter than adjacent lemma; lemmas purplish, bifid at apex, 7- nerved, with long, divergent, bent awn fixed close to tip. | ||

Taxonomy notes | Described from Massachusetts and Montreal. Specimens belong to subsp. purpurascens. Broken line on circumpolar map in- dicates range of subsp. calldosa (Turcz.) Koyama & Kawano (S. callosa Turcz.). |
