DescriptionUp to 9 dm high, yellowish-green; culms from stout but very brittle subterranean runners; leaves of sterile shoots arranged in 2 rows; leaves up to 20 cm long, 3-8 mm broad; panicle ample, open, with capillary branches; spikelets with 1-7 flowers; glumes broadly scarious-margined, shorter than adjacent lemma.
EcologyArctic polygon tundra; lakeshores and banks of streams in shallow water.

Highly variable. Specimens from interior have larger panicle and many-flowered spikelets.
