DescriptionGreen or glaucous, tufted; sheaths of leaves usually glabrous; leaves flat, scabrous or sparsely long-hairy above; spikes dense, erect or slightly nodding, sometimes unilateral; spikelets 10-20 mm long, usually green, 5-7-flowered; glumes 10—17 mm long, broadly lanceolate, 5-7-ribbed, keeled, scabrous on ribs; lemmas about 10 mm long, glabrous or more or less scabrous toward tip, with erect awn 1-3 cm long; joints of rachilla strigose or villous; anthers 1.5-2 mm long.
EcologyWoods, hillsides, riverbanks. Described from cultivated specimens raised from seeds collected in “Western North America.”
