DescriptionCulms from creeping rhizome; leaves dark green, triangular, channeled toward tip, broad; inflorescence with 2-3 long, involucral leaves; spikelets on flattened peduncles; anthers 2.5-3 mm long; bristles white, exceptionally pinkish (var. coloratum Hult.).
EcologyWet bogs and shores. The lower part of the stem is sometimes eaten by natives, raw or mixed with seal oil.

Var. giganteus Hult. is an extremely coarse type, up to 1 meter tall, with leaves up to 8 mm broad, occurring especially on the west coast of Kenai Peninsula. The hybrid E. angustifolium X Scheuchzeri has been called E. Rousseauianum Ray- mond; the hybrid E. angustifolium var. majus X Chamissonis has been called E. beringianum Raymond.
