Description | Loosely tufted, with short runners; culm leafless, with 2 basal sheaths, the upper with oblique mouth; spike ovate, 5-7-flowered; scales ovate, obtuse to somewhat acute, brown with hyaline margin, the lower about half as long as the spike and encircling half the culm; bristles 6; achenes trigonous-obovoid, with barely dis- tinguishable tubercle, conical above and black at tip. |
Ecology | Swamps. Described from Berne, Switzerland. Circumpolar map includes range of the eastern North American subsp. Fernaldii (Svens.) Hult. (E. pauciflora var. Fernaldii Svens.). |
