DescriptionDensely caespitose; culm coarse, sharply angled, and scabrous at summit; leaves firm, shorter than culms, about 4 mm broad; inflorescence capitate, dark brown; spikelets tightly compressed, with staminate flowers at base, pistillate flowers at tip; scales dark brown or chestnut-brown; perigynia ovate, dark brown, serrulated in margin, with long, slender beak.
EcologyMeadows, gravelly shores. Described from Falkland Islands, subsp. pachystachya from Unalaska.
