DescriptionCaespitose, with short runners covered with purplish-brown sheaths; culms longer than leaves; leaves 3-5 mm broad; spikes 3-5, the apical with pistillate flowers above, the lateral pistillate, the lower long-peduncled; lowest bract foliaceous, ex- tending beyond inflorescence; scales somewhat acute, black, as long as perigynia or slightly shorter; perigynia light-colored, papillose, with short, slightly emarginate, purplish beak; stigmas 3.
EcologyMountain meadows. Described from European Alps. Circumpolar map gives range of C. atrata in a broad sense.
