DescriptionForming small tufts with capillary, light-green leaves; culms longer than leaves, stiff, with reddish-brown sheaths at base (hidden in tuft); bracts short, subulate; terminal spike staminate, sessile, the lateral 1-3, very small, with 1-4 perigynia; scales inconspicuous, exceeded by perigynia, broadly ovate, purplish-black, with hyaline margins; perigynia obovate to nearly spherical, glabrous, nerveless, darker above, abruptly contracted into cylindrical hyaline-tipped beak 0.5 mm long.
EcologyDry, calcareous soil.

Easily presumed to have but one spike, because of its ag- gregate spikes; superficially similar to C. rupestris (sp. no. 8, above). On circum- polar map, range of C. terrae-novae Fern. is included.
