Description | Caespitose; culms stiff, smooth; leaves 3—4 mm wide, grayish-green, with light- brown sheaths; lowest bract short, setaceous, with brown sheath; apical spike stami- nate, obovate, the lateral 2-3 pistillate, ovate, on slender pedicels, drooping in age; scales ovate, acuminate, dark; perigynia broader than scales, thin, nerveless, sca- brous in margin, tapering into long, bidentate, distinctly hyaline-margined beak. | ||
Ecology | Wet places, in mountains to at least 1,000 meters, preferably on calcareous soil. | ||
Taxonomy notes | A very tall plant (up to 60 cm) has been called var. major (Boeck.) Raymond (C. ustulata var. major Boeck.). |
