Taxonomy
notes
An extremely variable aggregate species. Most of the specimens belong to subsp. nodulosus (Wahlenb.) Lindm. (J. nodulosus Wahlenb., J. Richardsonianus Schult.), with straw-colored, scarious-margined perianth leaves, rounded in apex, and with slightly exserted, acute capsules. West of Kodiak Island and elsewhere, a type closer to subsp. alpinus [var. alpestris Hartm.; var. mucroniflorus (Clairv.) Aschers. & Graebn.] occurs, with sessile, dark flowers in compact heads. J. alpinus described from Dauphiné, subsp. nodulosus from Sweden. Broken line on Alaskan map indicates range of subsp. alpinus. Circumpolar map indicates range of entire species complex.
