DescriptionCulms filiform, 1-3-leaved, in small tufts; leaves filiform, the basal shorter than culm; heads 1 (-3), each 1-4-flowered; lowest bract shorter than inflorescence; perianth pale, light brown, striped; sepals acute; petals somewhat obtuse; capsule ovate, light yellowish-brown, longer than perianth; anthers much shorter than fila- ments.
EcologyWet bogs. J. stygius described from Europe, subsp. americanus from America.

American plant differs from Eurasiatic plant in having larger, more distinctly mucronate capsules. Circumpolar map indicates range of entire species complex.
