Description | Stem mostly hispid at base, forking, from short, stout rhizome with thick pubes- cent roots; peduncles simple or forked; perianth white or yellowish-white (never pink); fruit red. | ||
Ecology | Moist woods, alder thickets. Described from Europe. Young shoots can be eaten raw; the berries are also edible. | ||
Taxonomy notes | Within area of concern, 4 weakly differentiated varieties occur: var. denticulatus Fassett, with minutely denticulated leaf margin (the only variety common in the Aleutians); var. americanus Schult. [subsp. americanus (Schult.) Love & Lovel], with leaf margin entire; var. papillatus Ohwi [subsp. papillatus (Ohwi) Love & Love], with denticulate leaf margin and smaller flowers (Hoonah); and var. chalazatus Fassett, with leaf margin entire and with numerous small papillae on lower side of leaf (Curry). Circumpolar map indicates range of entire species com- plex; var. amplexifolius occurs only in Europe. |
