DescriptionStems glandular-pubescent from stout rootstock; cauline leaves 3-5, ciliate on veins and margin; flowers 1-3, in axis of foliaceous bracts, fragrant; sepals usually purplish, the upper ovate to ovate-lanceolate, the lower united; petals 3.5-4 cm long, twisted spirally; lip 2-4 cm long, yellow, purple-veined.
EcologyWoods, swamps. C. calceolus described from Europe, Asia, and America, subsp. parviflorum from Virginia.
