Description | Shrub or small tree up to 5 meters tall; twigs densely pubescent, in age glabres- cent; leaves crowded at ends of twigs, obovate to oblanceolate, obtuse to acute, entire or somewhat crenate-serrate, dark green and glabrate above, paler and more or less reddish, short-pubescent, below; catkins sessile or on very short, leafy peduncles; bracts obovate, black; capsules tomentose, short-pedicellated; stamens 2, glabrous. | ||

Taxonomy notes | Described from the Columbia River, Fort Van- couver. Our form is generally var. coetanea Ball, with catkins appearing at the same time as the leaves and with short, leafy peduncles. Plants with dense, persistent pubes- cence have been called f. poikila Schneid. |
