DescriptionStem up to 50 cm (in the Arctic about 10 c¢m) tall, reddish-violet at base; basal leaves long-petiolated, lanceolate or ovate-lanceolate, blunt, with cuneate or square base, often reddish below; stem leaves acute; inflorescence leafless or nearly so; un- branched or with few upright branches; flowers bisexual; valves entire, without grain.
EcologyCommon in wet places, snow beds. The arctic counterpart of R. aquaticus L.

Var. perlatus Hult., with ovate, broad leaves, occurs in the Bering Sea area.
UsesExtensively collected, boiled, and preserved for use in the winter by the natives. The leaves are eaten chopped and cooked with fat and sugar by the Siberian Eskimo.
