Description | Stems up to 35 cm tall, usually shorter, from stout rootstock; leaves reniform, long-petiolated, basal; 2 outer sepals broad and flat, the 2 inner appressed, boat- shaped, about half as broad; stamens 6; fruit with red wing about as broad as body. |
Ecology | Wet places, snow beds, in mountains and on tundra, in the Yukon to over 2,000 meters, in the Brooks Range to over 1,000 meters. Described from Lapland, Wallis (Switzerland). |
Uses | The leaves, but not the root, can be eaten raw. |
