DescriptionStems ascending, loosely tufted, glabrous or somewhat pubescent in lower part; leaves sessile, ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate, acute, glabrous or sometimes some- what pubescent; flowers in few-flowered cymes, in axis of scarious or scarious- margined bracts, sometimes solitary; sepals scarious-margined, ovate, mostly glabrous except in the ciliated margin, somewhat shorter than petals; capsule dark-colored, longer than sepals.
EcologyStony places in the mountains and on tundra.

A similar plant occurring in the interior, with the back of the sepals profusely pubescent, has been called S. “Laxmannii”; its status is obscure.
