DescriptionGlabrous or nearly so; pulvinate, with short pedicels, in exposed arctic or high- alpine specimens; loosely tufted, with longer pedicels, in less exposed habitats [var. élegans (Cham. & Schlecht.) Hult. [Arenaria elegans Cham. & Schlecht.; M. elegans (Cham. & Schlecht.) Schischk.)]; leaves linear, blunt, triangular in cross section; fascicles of leaves in axils, which sometimes form globular buds [var. orthotrichoides (Schischk.) Hult. (M. orthotrichoides Schischk.)]; sepals ovate, acute, 3-nerved, purplish; petals from slightly shorter to slightly longer than calyx; capsule spherical, about as long as sepals.
EcologyRock slides, dry ridges in the mountains, and moist places on tundra. Described from Melville Island.
