Description | Stems with dark-brown, capitate glands, from very thick caudex, with dark- brown roots and dark-brown leaf bases, basal leaves reniform to suborbicular- cordate; acutely dentate to shallowly lobed, glabrous above, with scattered coarse hairs on nerves below, ciliate with coarse, capitate glands in margin; stem leaves small, the upper lanceolate; sepals ovate-lanceolate, acute, glandular; petals elliptic- lanceolate to obovate, acute, strongly nerved, white or pink, especially at base; stamens 5; follicles divergent, with long, slender beak and capitate stigma. | ||
Ecology | Subalpine forests, tundra meadows, along creeks, to at least 1,800 meters. De- scribed from the Arctic shore between the Mackenzie and Coppermine Rivers. | ||
Taxonomy notes | A very showy endemic, almost certainly a relict from the late Tertiary. (See color section. ) |
