DescriptionLoosely tufted, with numerous sterile shoots; basal leaves shiny, fleshy, spatulate, blunt, glabrous, with reflexed margin; flowering stems with few, linear leaves, glandular-pubescent; calyx lobes broadly ovate, often purplish, reflexed in fruit; petals bright yellow twice as long as calyx lobes or longer; filaments subular, shorter than petals.
EcologyRock slides, dry places in the mountains to at least 2,200 meters.

Var. purpurea Hult. (at False Pass, Unimak Island), has purple petals. Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of the closely related S. chry- santha Gray.
