Description | Loosely caespitose; caudex branched, densely covered with elliptic, sessile, gray- ish-green leaves, mucronate in apex and with stout, white cilia in the margin, some- times capitate-glandular above; flowering stems with several linear leaves, more or less glandular; sepals glabrous or ciliate; petals white or cream-colored, spotted with yellow; follicles oblong, with long, divergent beaks. | ||
Ecology | Rock crevices, rocky soil, in the mountains to at least 2,200 meters, not on cal- careous soil. | ||
Taxonomy notes | In the high mountains, specimens occur with globular or sausage-like shoots and very dense leaves; these approach subsp. cherleroides (see next description). Broken line on circumpolar map indicates range of other subspecies. |
