Description | Densely tufted or matted; stems with marcescent leaves at base; leaves short- petiolated, palmately 3-5-lobed, with linear to oblong, obtuse lobes; flowering stems 1-flowered to few-flowered, erect, glandular; petals oblong, white; follicles nearly entirely adnate. | ||
Ecology | Stony slopes, sandy places on tundra; to at least 2,300 meters in the St. Elias Range. | ||
Taxonomy notes | Most specimens belong to subsp. sileneflora (Sternb.) Hult. (S. sileneflora Sternb.), but other races, such as subsp. monticola (Small) Pors. (Muscaria monticola Small), have been reported from the area. Racial conditions within the species are still un- clear. S. caespitosa described from the Alps of Lapland, Switzerland, Trent (north- ern Italy), and Montpellier (France) ; subsp. sileneflora from Unalaska, Eschscholtz Bay, and Chamisso Island (Kotzebue Sound). The closely related S. magellanica Poir. is found in South America. |
