DescriptionStems from long, woody, branching rootstock; leaves 3-foliate (rarely with lateral lobes cleft to base, var. pentaphylloides Hult., known from Dawson) ; leaflets often stipitate and somewhat lobed, broadly obovate to rhombic, with broad, ovate or ovate-lanceolate stipules; flowers 1-3, the uppermost usually overtopping the leaves; peduncles often glandular; calyx tube pubescent, often with a few glands; sepals short, triangular; petals obovate, short and broad, sometimes emarginate; fruit a globular aggregate of dark purple drupelets, palatable, richly flavored, excel- lent for jam and for flavoring liqueur.
EcologyMeadows, thickets, along creeks. Described from Sweden, Siberia, and Canada.
